Farlan Church (ファーラン・チャーチ Fāran Chāchi?) was a character from Attack on Titan: No Regrets, and was one of Levi Ackerman's companions prior to joining the Survey Corps, the other being Isabel Magnolia.
Farlan was a young man with grey eyes and rather pale brown hair. His bangs hung over his forehead, between his eyes. Before he joined the Survey Corps, Farlan's civilian clothes featured a simple long-sleeve white shirt with knee-high boots.
Farlan, in contrast to Isabel, was very focused and able to make the distinction between when to have fun and when to be serious. Like Levi, Farlan was usually depicted as level-headed and calm, but disliked when things got out of control. He had a clear understanding of when he was defeated, and stopped resisting if he knew that he had lost. Farlan placed a lot of trust in Levi, and followed his decisions and leadership without question.
StoryEditPrior to the fall of Wall Maria, Farlan was a delinquent roaming the capital's Underground District. At one point in time, Farlan decided to test Levi's strength by having him fight a group of thugs. Farlan's plan was to see if Levi was worth recruiting into his group of thugs or not, but was surprised to see Levi beat them all single-handedly. He then decides to join Levi (though it is unknown how he convinced Levi as he neglects to tell Isabel the rest of his story).
Alongside his companions, Levi and Isabel, they were notorious for having a strong reputation (due to Levi's strength). Having somehow obtained and learned how to use Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear, Farlan eventually finds himself and his companions captured by Erwin Smith of the Survey Corps. After Levi is blackmailed into joining the Corps, Farlan and Isabel choose to follow him, all three resolve to one day claw their way into a better life.On his first expedition outside the walls, Farlan assisted Levi in taking down an Abnormal Titan. While obviously nervous and unsettled at the thought of fighting a Titan, he gained his courage and morale upon seeing Levi charge into battle. On cue, he and Isabel sliced the Titan's knees in unison; allowing Levi to finish the Titan off.
The next day of the expedition, due to heavy rain, Levi decided to take the chance to hunt down Erwin, using the rain to his advantage. Farlan advises caution but Levi brushes him off. Despite Farlan's protests, Levi forced the conversation to a close and sets off to kill Erwin.Soon after making it back to the squad, Farlan and Isabel are attacked by five Titans. Levi returned to find the Titans attacking the squad, with Isabel and Farlan trying to avoid the battle. As they tried to flee, startled by a Titan, Farlan's Horse falls back onto his leg; pinning him to the ground. As Farlan tries to free himself, Isabel uses her 3DMG to distract the Titans; just barely managing to avoid their grips. When she goes in to kill one she ends up slipping, face first into the Titan's back. As another Titan gets a clear view of her, it launches itself straight at her, killing her on the back of the first Titan. Her death causes Farlan to turn around and confront the Titans, but he realizes that his fall had badly damaged his equipment. Thinking that it's the end for him, squad leader Flagon Darlett distracts the Titan; while at the same time giving him orders to retreat. Farlan frantically watches as Flagon is eaten by the a second Titan. Still trying to fight back, he is the next one to be grabbed. Just before he's eaten he sees Levi. He waves to him, like he used to in the underground streets, in a farewell gesture. He is eaten just as Levi is within grappling range. Filled with rage, Levi slices the Titan's stomach open and pulls what's left of Farlan out. However, by this time, he was already dead with only half of his body left.
Having witnessed the deaths of the two first true friends he ever had, Levi went into blind rage and killed all the Titans. Upon confronting Erwin, who had seen the steam from the fallen Titans, Levi attacked and attempted to kill him, blaming him for their deaths. But Erwin questioned what would have happened if Levi had stayed with his friends, instead of leaving them to fend for themselves while he had gone forward blindly and without thinking. This caused Levi to believe that it was his own arrogance that got his friends killed.
However, Erwin refuted this stating that the real reason for their deaths were the Titans and the lack of knowledge that the humans had on them. He went on about how the rich humans inside the Walls choose to turn a blind eye to the swath of destruction that is happening right outside their doors. To conclude, Erwin stated that the Scouts are Humanity's only hope of being free and asked Levi again to join them. This time Levi accepted.
They made a full withdrawal for the Walls, while Levi took one last look at the steaming corpses of Titans that would serve as a grave for Farlan and Isabel.
Farlan stole a Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear and along with Levi, they trained themselves in the use of the gear. Due to the fact that they used it a lot of time in the Subterranean City, he became proficient with it. He almost escaped from a squad of the Survey Corps, mankind's greatest soldiers, and he also stated that Levi, Isabel and he had escaped from the Military Police several times before.
He seems to be very smart and skillful, as seen when he confessed that he trained himself with the 3D Maneuver Gear.
- Levi Ackerman - Having heard rumors of Levi's strength, Farlan originally set up a test to see how strong he was. He was amazed at Levi's skill and hoped he could convince him to join his gang. After Levi refused, he eventually joined up with Levi instead. The two became close friends, with Levi greatly valuing Farlan's opinions and strategies.
- Isabel Magnolia - Though they were usually at constant odds with each other, they are close friends and have shown a great level of cooperation and synchronization. With few words between them, they operate with extreme precision.
- Yan - Farlan worried so much about Yan's leg injuries that he paid more than Yan needed. It seemed that Farlan cared for Yan's health.
