Xavi Inocencio (シャビィ・イノセンシオ Shabī Inosenshio?) is the son of the late merchant, Dario Inocencio, and the older brother of Sharle. He currently holds the position of Team Leader within the Military Police Brigade.

Appearance

Xavi Inocencio

A young Xavi

In his early teens, Xavi had short curly hair, and often had a smug grin on his face. He often wore a short white shirt with the collar popped, long trousers with a scarf as a belt, and tall boots. In his later teens, Xavi became taller with a lean but strong physique, and his hair became straighter than it was as a child. He frequently maintained that same facial grin, irrespective of the circumstances. His hair also became much darker in color around the lower half of the back of his head.

Personality

Although highly talented and intelligent, Xavi is an arrogant and cruel bully who took pleasure from physically abusing Kuklo, and boasted about taking his right eye.[2] Xavi is also very manipulative of his peers, and analytical of their weak traits which he can exploit to his advantage. He usually keeps a calm demeanor, believing that most things occurring around him are trivial. Xavi, however, thinks highly of his sister Sharle and shows care, implying that Xavi is still kind to his loved ones.

Despite putting up a brave face and boasting for years how he is not afraid of the Titans, Xavi is actually quite fearful of them and froze when he encountered one up close for the first time.[3] While Xavi does view himself as being superior to others, he is capable of recognizing skill and does show respect to others (only if he believes they have earned it.)

Story

The Titan's Son arc

Since birth, nobleman Dario Inocencio has been training and preparing Xavi to lead the Military in the world behind the Walls; when Xavi was in his early teens, in order to make him stronger, Dario buys Xavi a slave called Kuklo, whose mysterious birth from a corpse regurgitated by a Titan led people to assume was the "son" of a Titan.[4]

Roughly a week before the arrival of Kuklo, Xavi is invited by a rival family to dinner, and he brings Sharle along despite her reluctance to attend. As the heir to the family, Abel, boasts about his superior upbringing, he begins to insult Xavi and Sharle's parents. Xavi does not react, but it is not until Abel implies that Xavi is a sloppy swordsman does he do anything. Xavi asks Abel to demonstrate his supposedly superior dueling abilities outside; Xavi promptly bests him and mocks Abel while holding a sword to his throat. Dario scolds Xavi later, but Xavi claims that Abel earned it by insulting him. As Dario reminds Xavi he must become stronger if he hopes to join (and lead) the Military Police someday, Xavi swears that he will be the only one to vanquish the Titans.[5]

Under his father's urging, a sadistic Xavi beats Kuklo daily, often searching for new ways to inflict as much pain on the boy as possible in order to be seen as "growing stronger" against the Titans. To further humiliate Kuklo, Xavi frequently brings school friends with him to watch as he took on the "son of a Titan."[6] Xavi persists in this cruel behavior almost every day for the next two years, growing in confidence each time he did so. Unbeknownst to Xavi, his sister Sharle teaches Kuklo to speak and tries to help Kuklo escape; however, on the day of their planned escape, the Titan Cult attacks the Inocencio residence with their own plan to free Kuklo and make him their leader.[7]

Xavi blinds Kuklo

Xavi strikes Kuklo with his sword, blinding him

After he is presumably awakened by the Titan Cult breaking into the Inocencio home, Xavi rushes to find his father and sister. He soon finds they have murdered his father Dario in his bed. In a fit of grief and rage, Xavi takes one of the swords nearby and begins to slaughter any and all cult members he can find; while he cuts down members of the cult, Xavi angrily belittles them, seeing their lives as worthless.[8] He finds several cult members aiming to kill Sharle, but swiftly deals with them and saves his sister from death. As Xavi turns towards Sharle, he notices Kuklo has been freed as well; the sight of seeing his slave walking freely on his family's estate leads Xavi to assume that Kuklo summoned the cultists to their house and is leading the assault. He immediately tries obsessively to kill Kuklo despite Sharle's protests. Eventually, a still smiling Xavi strikes Kuklo in the face with his sword, severely damaging Kuklo's right eye.[9] Kuklo fights back against Xavi with exceptional aggression by kneeing him in the head, knocking him unconscious. Kuklo and Sharle then escape together, leaving Xavi behind.

Shiganshina arc

Xavi, out of vengeance, later gives false testimony to the Military Police that Kuklo led the assault and murdered his father.[10] This would lead to Kuklo being found within the city of Shiganshina and eventually arrested. Xavi soon after joins the Training Corps to further his military ambitions while simultaneously running his father's company from the sidelines. During his tenure in the Training Corps, Xavi bragged to his classmates many times how he was able to beat the famed "son of a Titan" and how he managed to critically injure it.

Visit to the Industrial City arc

Xavi joins MP

Xavi is selected to join the Military Police

One year later, after passing every single course in the Training Corps with full marks, Xavi is brought into the office of the Training Corps superintendent. He is introduced to Captain Gloria Bernhart of the Shiganshina division of the Military Police Brigade. Despite still having two years left of training, she remarks that Xavi is driven by his desire to join the Military Police; when he confirms his desire, Gloria immediately recruits him.[11] Soon after, he has a meeting with his father's company director, Mr. Brenke, to whom he gives complete control of his father's company. Before Brenke leaves, he mentions a rumor that Xavi's sister Sharle was sighted in the Industrial City, momentarily catching Xavi by surprise.[12]

Not wanting to have Brenke believe that his sister is hiding among filthy peasants, he tells Brenke that it must have simply been a lookalike, and that Sharle is actually living at a boarding house in Shiganshina District. Xavi then discusses with his butler Rixner how he will get Sharle back, given that as a member of the Shiganshina Military Police, he has no jurisdiction in the Industrial City. He considers sending a company employee to find Sharle, after which Rixner whispers a suggestion to Xavi, causing Xavi to smile. He declares that Sharle's "eloping game" is over, and soon he would return her to him so that she could be of use to his plans.[13]

For what they did to his father, Xavi later joins a Military Police operation to track down the escaped members of the Titan Cult. When he finds three of the cultists, he taunts them before choosing to kill them with his sword rather than arrest them, defeating all three easily in combat. Xavi then turns his attention to their leader, whom he disarms and delivers to Gloria Bernhart. Much to the chagrin of Xavi's superiors, Gloria gives Xavi free range to torture the leader as he saw fit.

Xavi washes up

Xavi cleans up after interrogating the leader of the Titan Cult

After Xavi spends the night torturing the lead cultist, he is picked on by three senior colleagues who are insulted at how much they keep being shown up by a new trainee who seems disinterested by his work, but who is favored with the higher-ups. They then insist on "finishing his education" by beating Xavi to a pulp. However, Xavi easily defeats all three men and further humiliates them by saying "Thank you for your instruction" as he walks away. Immediately afterward, Gloria invites Xavi into her office, where she informs him that he would not be punished, and that she recognizes and appreciates his attitude and skills. Gloria then informs Xavi of the fact that her uncle, Bauduin Bernhart, vice commander of the Military Police, is rivaled for the position of future MP Commander by Jentsch Dafner, and that she is to send Xavi to the Industrial City to act as her proxy, and also to conduct a "mission" for her.[14]

Xavi accepts the mission, knowing full-well that he is being used as a pawn and that Bernhart has set an agent to assassinate him should he fail. He then has Rixner specially modify his carriage so that he can sneak in an agent of his own to find Sharle while he continues working on his "secret mission". As he travels, he unknowingly passes by Kuklo on his way back to Shiganshina.[15] Upon arriving in the Industrial City, Xavi once again begins to smile, knowing full-well that he will soon be reunited with his sister; plus, he now knows Gloria's weaknesses which can be used to his advantage.

Dissidence Movement arc

After arriving in the Industrial City, Xavi rendezvous with Matteus and is taken to an underground area. He is brought to a meeting involving his mission from Gloria; to infiltrate, and ultimately take out, the Dissidence Movement within the Industrial City. He is introduced to the leader of the resistance, August, and is welcomed into the group. After gathering intelligence on different weapons the group has (including two bombs), Xavi reveals that he is due to meet Captain Dafner and excuses himself; he meets his agent who tells Xavi that his sister Sharle is indeed within the Industrial City, working under Xenophon Harkimo as a craftsman and laborer and that he has five other men with him to secure her. Xavi notes that his sister will need to be re-disciplined and tells his agent that an uprising will occur in two days. As he travels to his meeting with Captain Dafner, Xavi mentions to his agent that Sharle is to be taken during the event and that she is not to be harmed.[16]

Xavi kills Matteus

Xavi slices Matteus' throat, killing him

During the uprising, both Xavi and Matteus go with Juli to take over the main MP office. When he overhears that Xenophon's workshop will also be targeted, Xavi fears that the agents will not be able to safely get Sharle out.[17] He breaks off and rushes to intercept the dissidents, cursing how Gloria's overall plan has put Sharle at risk. However, Matteus followed him and inquires where he is going. Xavi tries to bluff his way out, but Matteus does not fall for it. He mentions that after the rebellion, a scapegoat will be needed and lunges at Xavi.[18] The two duel each other in the street, with Xavi caught by surprise by Matteus' speed. Eventually, Matteus is able to overpower Xavi; Matteus sadistically mentions how he is looking forward "to slicing up that smug pretty boy face of yours" and goes to kill Xavi. However, Xavi's agent interferes and wounds Matteus, giving Xavi the opportunity to slice Matteus' neck and kill him.[19] The agent, Fuchs, informs him that the five men sent to Xenophon's workshop have been killed, and they make their way over. After Xavi kills two dissident members, the workers inside the workshop inform him that Xenophon was taken by August.

Kuklo and Xavi surprised

Xavi and Kuklo are shocked to see the other alive

Xavi is able to see Sharle get kicked off the roof of the workshop and carried away. Along with Fuchs, he is able to track down Sharle's location and is stunned to see that Kuklo, despite the report to the Military Police, is still alive and was the one who had rescued her.[20] He immediately charges Kuklo and angrily tries to kill him, placing the blame on him once more for his father's death. He claims that Sharle is blind to the fact that he is the spawn of a Titan, calling her a disgrace to their family name.[21] Despite his surprise and anger, he offers to both of them that he will spare Kuklo's life if Sharle returns back home with him.[22] Both refuse and Xavi blind-sides Kuklo; he taunts Kuklo that he is a lot stronger and more experienced than him since they last saw each other. He extends his offer one more time and Kuklo still refuses. Xavi orders Fuchs to not interfere this time, citing that he would be unfit to lead the family if he cannot defeat Kuklo.[23] Xavi is surprised to see his sword break under Kuklo's, as well as how the latter was able to evade his strike; however, he headbutts Kuklo and slices the back of his upper right leg, causing Kuklo to fall unconscious into a nearby river. Xavi claims victory once again and, after picking up Kuklo's sword, returns with Sharle and Fuchs back to his hideout.[24]

Underground City arc

Xavi and Sharle at a social event

Xavi and Sharle attend a social event

After Sharle is taken back home, Xavi organizes her to accompany him to a society event and orders Rixner to find possible suitors for her.[25] The night of the event, Xavi is surprised to see Gloria in attendance with her uncle Vice Commander Bauduin Bernhart; he tries to keep Sharle behind him in fear of her being recognized by Gloria as having took part in the Movement. He is informed by Gloria that August was killed after being interrogated and she promotes Xavi to take Matteus' old position of team leader.[26] As Gloria is about to excuse herself, Xavi, who is still nervous about Sharle's possible identification, inquires if they were able to identify all of the members of the rebellion and is relieved that Sharle was not mentioned as a member. Unfortunately, Gloria is able to notice Sharle and Xavi nervously introduces Gloria to Sharle.[27] When Gloria mentions that the initial report of the attack on Xavi's family house included Sharle being abducted, Xavi tries to cover it by stating that it was a servant instead and that Sharle was staying with a family friend at the time. He is momentarily taken back when Sharle agrees with his story of their father keeping her home most of the time and rarely allowed to leave the house. After Gloria leaves, Xavi wonders to himself what caused this sudden change in behavior from Sharle and reassures himself that he did kill Kuklo from the blows in their duel.[28] Several days later, Xavi is furious with Rixner over selecting Michael Pottering as a possible suitor after hearing that him and two others tried to rape Sharle. He acknowledges that he is partly to blame for rushing the investigation and is more importantly glad Sharle is safe. After vowing to financially destroy the Pottering family, he inquires about Sharle's current whereabouts. Realizing that she is either going towards the Industrial City or Shiganshina, he orders Rixner to place guards on all carriages going in those directions.

Restoration of the Survey Corps arc

Kuklo and Xavi meet again

Xavi and Kuklo encounter one another at the Training Academy

Eventually, Xavi is informed that Fuchs discovered Sharle located within Trost District.[29] Surprised that Sharle was able to evade the guards he had stationed, Xavi uneasily notes that Sharle is becoming cleverer at evading his men. However, Xavi is pleased with Fuchs' ingenuity and orders Rixner to provide Fuchs with anything he may require. He notifies Rixner to tell Fuchs to continue pursuing Sharle at the moment and to not capture her immediately. Xavi is surprised to hear that Sharle was also seen traveling with a middle-aged man after leaving Stohess;[30] Xavi demands Rixner to identify the man and what Sharle was doing there, noting that his leave time is ending soon and will be forced to leave the interior and return back to Shiganshina.[31] Xavi learns from Fuchs that, despite the injuries Kuklo sustained in their recent duel, he is still alive; Xavi becomes frustrated and incensed by his rival's seemingly endless amount of luck. When he hears Gloria allowing the Survey Corps three months to produce results from a new device designed to fight Titans, Xavi volunteers to oversee the training regimen as a monitor on behalf of the Military Police. He arrives and his presence shocks Kuklo, Cardina and Sharle.[32]

Xavi maintains his balance

Xavi tries and easily maintains his balance

After assuring he is there merely on behalf of the Military Police to gauge the training efforts, he leaves to meet with Carlo Pikale. He is watching some of the recruits trying the aptitude training device and decides to try it out for himself; he goes over to Kuklo and asks if he can try it since he will be taking part in the expedition. Kuklo hesitantly agrees and Xavi effortlessly stays balanced, to the shock and surprise of everyone.[33] Smirking over how it was so simple, he asks Carlo to be introduced to the trainees. Everyone present learn that Xavi will be taking part in the expedition with the Survey Corps as well. Later that night, Xavi is met by Sharle in his quarters and is asked why he is really there.[34]

Inviting her in, Xavi brushes aside her attitude when he hears Sharle refuse to go back home; he places blame on their father for not raising Sharle right. He mentions that, as an Inocencio, he looks out for all members of his employees and family, which has allowed Sharle to live a comfortable life where there are scarce amounts of resources available. Xavi says that until the end of the expedition in the next few months, Sharle is free to do as she pleases. When asked why he is volunteering to take part in an expedition that poses a serious danger to himself, Xavi claims that it is due to his role as a monitor on behalf of the Military Police. However, Sharle claims that he is there to ensure that the Survey Corps will fail and be allowed for it to be dissolved as a result; Xavi does not respond, but forms a smile.[35] Over the course of the next few days, Xavi notes that many of the trainees have withdrawn their applications for the Survey Corps after the trip to Wall Maria. He questions Carlo if it was smart for him to show the trainees Titans so soon into the program.

Xavi belittles Felix

Xavi beats Felix and mocks his ambush attempt

After being assured the remaining trainees will be ready, Xavi takes his leave and goes to report in to Gloria.[36] When one of the trainees suffers an injury due to their vertical maneuvering equipment being sabotaged, Xavi is notified by Fuchs about the recent development, which makes him smirk.[37] He is later approached by Sharle to help Kuklo discover the culprits behind the sabotage;[38] Xavi is displeased with the request but due to Sharle being part of the investigation as well, he reluctantly agrees. He enlists Fuchs to assist him and lies in wait in the maintenance room, knocking out the culprits when they arrive. Xavi is rushed by one of the other recruits but easily subdues him. After Kuklo arrives, Xavi curtly criticizes him for his late arrival and leaves.[39] Later that night, Xavi is visited by Kuklo and makes a point that his involvement was strictly due to Sharle's participation and will not receive his help ever again; furthermore, Xavi states that now Kuklo is in debt to him and will have to return the favor at some point in the future.[40]

Survival Expedition arc

Xavi reminds Carlo of the MP's terms

Xavi informs Carlo of the expedition's deadline

Eventually, Xavi grows impatient with Carlo not setting a date for the expedition and goes to confront him about it. Ignoring Carlo's concerns over the weather and the risk it poses, Xavi reminds the captain that he has four days until the deadline is reached. He is told that the matter will be discussed that evening and Carlo resigns to the fact if conditions do not improve, he will personally call off the expedition; Xavi smirks at the thought, merely stating that he hopes that will not ultimately be the case.[41]

The day of the expedition arrives and Xavi rides up near the front of the procession with Carlo and the primary leaders of the expedition.[42] As they travel south of the Walls, Xavi notices that there are no Titans nearby and asks Carlo if he will be sending a scouting party ahead. He is unsatisfied by Carlo's remark as it being an unnecessary risk and journeys past the first oasis located five kilometers beyond the Wall.[43] As Xavi, Carlo and teams one through eight get close to the edge of the known territory, Xavi spots Carlo sending teams three and four to scout ahead and comments on how it is a stark difference from earlier.[44] In an uncharacteristic move, Xavi protests when Carlo decides to abort the expedition due to the weather and reluctance to risk his soldier's lives.[45]

Xavi confronts a Titan

Xavi comes face to face with a Titan

Just then, a red flare is sent off which alerts them to Titans nearby. Having had enough of Carlo's inaction and reluctance to continue the expedition, Xavi rides on ahead towards the oasis and ignores Carlo's calls to retreat.[46] After reaching the oasis, Xavi looks behind and sees Carlo and several others in the distance heading towards him.[47] Smirking, Xavi goes into the forest to try and find a trace of both teams three and four, along with any possible Titans. To his surprise and shock, Xavi suddenly comes face to face with a Titan in the process of devouring a member of the Survey Corps.[48]

Nervous and gripping his sword, Xavi is surprised when the Titan ultimately walks off without attacking him; scoffing at himself on how he acted, Xavi nevertheless acknowledges that Gloria's observations on Titans was indeed correct.[49] Observing and following footprints left by the Titan, Xavi turns around and heads in the other direction. Coming upon the members of the expedition, Xavi stays out of sight and, seeing Felix's set of vertical maneuvering equipment, steals it in anticipation of Kuklo coming to find him.[50] Sure enough, Xavi spies Kuklo navigating through the forest and tries to ambush him. The attack fails and Xavi resolves to kill his adversary once and for all.[51]

Acknowledging that he never believed Kuklo to be an actual offspring of a Titan, Xavi mentions Sharle's love for Kuklo and mockingly asks him if he even can process proper emotions. As the two continue to fight, Xavi is asked why he hates Kuklo with such a burning passion. Recalling how Kuklo never fought him, despite having been killed if he did, Xavi views Kuklo as a curse that has taken his family and will not have him take Sharle as well.[52] Xavi goes on to declare he had to wait until the expedition to kill him, knowing Sharle would immediately suspect him. During the fight, the Titan Ogre appears, horrifying Xavi by its immense size. He is pushed away by Kuklo and flies away as the latter is grabbed instead; pleased how he now can tell Sharle that Kuklo died during the expedition, Xavi stops to catch his breath a safe distance away.[53] However, he remembers how selflessly Kuklo sacrificed himself and glares back in the direction of the Titan, uncertain what to do.

Despite resolving to leave Kuklo to die, Xavi goes back to save him by blinding Ogre with a swift strike. He notices Kuklo is struggling to kill the Titan and Xavi throws the iron bamboo sword he stole from their duel in the Industrial City to him. Kuklo calls to Xavi to help kill Ogre and Xavi flies over and helps deliver the killing blow.[54] After Ogre dies and dissipates, Xavi brushes aside Kuklo's hand and gets to his feet. Smiling on how he has finally achieved his childhood goal of defeating a Titan, Xavi mentions to Kuklo that he witnessed the Survey Corps use the equipment successfully and will reflect it in his report. Xavi lets go his hatred of Kuklo and, without turning around, gives his blessing for him to marry Sharle as the two reach the rest of the surviving soldiers.

After returning back to the Capital, Xavi is informed that he has a letter from Gloria; reading it, he learns about her death by her uncle's hands and how he was behind many of the recent actions involving the Military Police. Xavi decides to honor her wish and meets up with several members of the government to build a case against the vice commander. Eventually, they have enough to bring charges against the vice commander and have him and the other nobles involved arrested and imprisoned.

Relationships

  • Sharle Inocencio - Despite being siblings, the two of them have a rather distant relationship. When the Inocencios bought Kuklo, Xavi could not understand Sharle's point of view when she had empathy towards Kuklo. Even so, Xavi plays his part as Sharle's older brother well; when the Inocencio household was under attack by the Titan Cult and its members, Xavi did nothing but try to protect her. Xavi has noticed that Sharle has become more unpredictable around him and tries his best to keep an eye on her.
  • Kuklo - Kuklo was under control of Xavi for the majority of his youth. Despite knowing that Kuklo cannot possibly be the spawn of a Titan, Xavi goes along with the story as a reason for him to savagely beat him over the course of several years, and was responsible for damaging Kuklo's right eye.[7] Xavi later begrudgingly develops a level of respect for Kuklo's skill and ability to survive, admitting to Kuklo that he fully believes him capable of stopping a Titan by himself and survive.[59] Despite hating Kuklo with a passion for most of his life, Xavi is able to start seeing Kuklo in a different light after the latter saves him from Ogre; upon helping to kill a Titan, Xavi finally lets go of his hatred. It is believed that despite his continued belittling of Kuklo, Xavi now inwardly sees Kuklo as an equal and gives his permission for Kuklo to marry his sister Sharle.
  • Gloria Bernhart - Gloria was Xavi's colleague and his higher-up in the Military Police Brigade. Although both of them acted like they respect each other, by no means did that imply that the two trusted each other. Xavi was wary of Gloria and her plans, all the while aware of her weaknesses that he was willing to exploit to his advantage if need be.
  • Cardina Baumeister - Xavi is an acquaintance of Cardina. The two had military training together and indirectly were familiar with each other due to their former family affiliation. Later on, Xavi meets up with Cardina again and expresses some desire to become better acquainted with his former classmate.[60]
  • Fuchs - After getting his life saved by Fuchs, Xavi holds him in great respect and sees him as his most valuable asset. Noting Fuchs' ingenuity and unwavering loyalty to his family, Xavi makes him his top field man and grants him access to any and all resources he might need to carry out future orders.

Trivia

  • His surname is of Spanish origin and means "innocent," which is ironic considering his cruel personality.
  • His name is the Catalan form of "Xavier" or "Javier," a common Spanish name.
